Ellen Catherine Gstalder died at New York Presbyterian Hospital on May 27th after a long struggle with Leukemia.

Ellen was born on June 26, 1976 and graduated from Horace Greeley High School. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Georgetown University in 1998. Immediately after graduation she joined Teach for America and was assigned to Orr Elementary School in Washington, D.C. and taught there for two and half years until she became ill. During the remissions in her illness, she studied at the Institute for Culinary Education in New York where she received a scholarship from Les Dames d'Escoffier, and received her professional chef's certificate in 2003. She had been accepted into the Masters Degree of Public Health program at the Steinhardt School of Education of New York University for the Fall 2004 semester.

Ellen is survived by her parents, Herbert and Barbara Gstalder of Chappaqua; her sister Karen Gstalder Dring of New York City; her brother Steven Gstalder of Valhalla, two nephews and her grandfather, Herbert Charles Gstalder of Southbury, Connecticut.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Ellen's name to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of New York, 475 Park Avenue South, 8th Floor, New York, NY 10016.
